Genius Hour 1.1

Namaste!

I started my yoga journey this week and it has hurt more than I thought it would. My mom has been doing it with me and it's so nice to have some time with her at the end of the day.

I started with some beginner videos on YouTube to help me understand poses and transitions here are the videos I used:

Yoga To Feel Your Best by Yoga With Adriene

Notable Poses:

1. Child's pose

This was one of my favorites. Sometimes it's just nice to put your head on the floor and not think for a while.

2. Down Dog

This one hurts a little bit more. My knees don't like this one very much but that should get better with time.

3. Rag Doll Pose

This was so awesome. I felt a good stretch in my hamstrings while also being able to be completely loose in my upper body. This also incorporated a small left and right sway which I prefer to static poses. It just felt great.

I experimented on my own with some of the more challenging poses I've seen just for fun. Here's one I tried:

It was not as hard as I thought it would be.

I have had a few challenges this week. I have been doing about ten to twenty minutes at night after work and I am usually super tired. However, it is nice to unwind after a long day with some yoga, which can actually be some pretty good comic relief.

Another challenge I have had is taking the instructors seriously. I can't concentrate very hard on the poses when the YouTube ladies are saying things like "hands into the earth" and talk about chakras. I also struggle to do things like "setting my intentions" and thanking my body for the work it's done. I want to be serious but it will take a while to overcome the preconceptions I have about the people who do yoga.

My dogs also do not like to leave me alone while I do my yoga. Maverick kept biting me while I was in downward dog which is kind of ironic. He would not hang out in his kennel without barking either. I had to cut that session short to protect myself. Here's the criminal:
I have enjoyed the small amount of time I have spent on yoga this week. I think this could become a legitimate hobby of mine once I understand more poses and transitions. Once I can do twenty minutes of yoga without a video, I think I will have a better time and be able to reduce stress much better.

I will be measuring how close I get to touching my toes, and I will post the progression with my scorpion. Here's week one:

I'm excited for next week to do some more advanced yoga and maybe try to get my dad to try it with me!

Namaste!

  1. I really like this genius hour topic! I believe yoga is great for the mind, body, and soul. As an athlete, I feel that it’s very relieving when I branch away from all the brute movements sports entail, and just sit and stretch my muscles for awhile. This is something many athletes tend to miss out on. I also think it’s neat that you’re measuring your progress with your toe touching ability. I hope you reach your goal!

  2. Yoga is really cool, especially trying to overcome some of the obstacles that you have stated. It is also really amazing that you want to overcome the preconceptions that you have about the people who do yoga. I think that mindset is a good one to have, because it shows that one thing can tie many people together.

  3. Yoga is a really neat idea to learn and practice, it doesn't hurt to be more flexible and relaxed. I think that it is also really cool that you already have ways that you can measure your progress. If you get the scorpion, do you have another, more difficult skill you can do to keep measuring your progress?
