Genius Hour 2.6

Painters Essentials 7 Review

I am going to review the program I use for digital art, and whether or not you should buy it if you want to start on your own.

This program came with the tablet I bought. It was about $60 and I got it on Amazon. The downloading process itself was pretty difficult, but that could just be me struggling with my laptop. It came with a tutorial and a booklet that has been relatively helpful for my Genius Hour.

Pros

  • Brush selection
    • There are way more brushes than I ever thought I would need. I really like how many blenders it comes with. There are also brush packs you can buy, but I don't believe I need them based on my art abilities.
  • Color Selection
    • The way the color wheel is set up is super great for choosing colors as well as finding colors to blend with.
  • Photo painting
    • One of my favorite parts about the program is that it makes it really easy to edit/trace photos. It will also paint over photos for you in so many different styles.
Cons
  • Un-user friendly
    • I have had a really hard time getting the files and layers correct in this program. Every so often, things will just disappear and I don't know how to get them back. Specifically with layers, I still don't know hoe they work.
  • Traditional/digital disconnect
    • This week I have been trying to copy some tutorials that are traditional pencil drawings. It feels too pixelated to make it really look good. Also, even though the brush is labeled as a pencil, the blenders don't interact with it like they would with a real pencil.
  • Lack of basic necessities
    • One of the things that makes me the most angry is that I cannot pick out a specific shape. There is no way to actually just stamp a shape on the page without making weird layers.
Overall, I enjoy what I can do with this program. I struggle sometimes since I think it was designed for more advanced artists. I would not get this program as a beginner as it is really hard to figure out and there are very few tutorials online. All in all, I am not disappointed with my purchase and I think it will serve me well through the rest of my genius hour.

Next week, I am going to try and start my final project. I am thinking of trying a basic portrait of one of the DnD characters. Hopefully I can make the brushes do what I want them to.

  1. Although this software may not be the best for beginners, you seem to be using it pretty well and still making progress despite all of the setbacks along the way. Maybe starting on a more advanced software will have been helpful to you in the future if you plan on continuing to practice this. I hope the remainder of this project goes well for you!
